The above list of deed restrictions is a hodge podge of formats
that has evolved over the years the neighborhood has existed, with
various people lending a hand.
The acrobat images (with the .pdf extension) have existed the longest
and I'm not sure who created them. The advantage of these files is that
they are an exact image of the original document with all the stamps, etc.
However, they are extremely large files which require a lot of time to
download and are somewhat difficult to read when you get them.
All of the ASCII and Word format documents (.txt and .doc extensions
respectively) have been created by me, using optical character recognition
(OCR) software. This produces a compact file that's easy to read. I don't
have software that will produce the Acrobat images available for the older
deed restrictions. As a result, most of the deed restrictions that we have
available are in one format or the other, but rarely in both.
I have no objection to posting both Acrobat and text images. However, I
have lately developed the opinion that posting both ASCII (.txt) and Word (.doc)
formats is redundant. Since ASCII is a much more universal format, readable
by literally any computer in the universe, I think I may discontinue offering
Microsoft Word format documents in the future.
I would invite any comments regarding your opinion about the presentation
of these deed restrictions. What formats do you think are appropriate? Please
send your comments to webmaster@andover.org.
